Do I Need to Feed My Trees?

July 23, 2019

Trees may be some of the more low-maintenance components in your landscape, but they still need some TLC! Regular fertilization can help keep your trees strong and, if caught early, can help to speed recovery from some diseases.

Here’s what you should know about feeding your trees:

Needs Vary

Your trees will likely respond well to fertilization treatments in the fall or after spring’s last frost.  However, the fertilizer you will need for will vary based on:

  • Soil makeup
  • The tree’s pH tolerance
  • Sunlight
  • Stressors
    • E.g. Nearby pants competing for nutrients or low-moisture areas
  • Age
    • Newly-planted trees should always be planted using a starter fertilizer, and can benefit form fertilization treatments as they grow.

While there are plenty of all-purpose fertilizers on the market, a tree service professional can help you choose the right food for your trees and provide guidance on how and when to apply for the best results.

Don’t Forget to Water

Just as important (if not more so) than feeding your trees, is ensuring they have get the water they need. Damage can result from a tree that gets too much or too little water. If you’re not sure how much water your tree needs, seek guidance from a tree expert.

Most trees can benefit from fertilization, and customizing food and water for your trees’ specific needs is the best way to keep them healthy and happy.
